Healthy animals are an essential part of a healthy environment!
Our adult pugs went "green" about 6 years ago and they've never been happier - or healthier! We phased out the store-bought (expensive) dog kibble and began feeding them a more natural diet - one that consists of raw meat and bones, fresh veggies, fruit, herbs, some cooked grains, and other wholesome foods that we prepare ourselves. We noticed the benefits immediately! Our dogs became calmer, yet more active, their eyes were brighter, and their coats shinier. The constant over-eating that pugs are known for, (as well as the resulting rather smelly gastric disturbances,) completely disappeared. They eat twice a day and are content. (They do love their treats of raw bones and apple slices, though!)
Changing their diet was only the first step in changing over to healthier, happier, more natural pugs. The next was deciding to use holistic medicinal practices as much as possible - just as we do for ourselves. It's amazing how well their bodies were designed to heal themselves when given the proper nutrition! I can honestly say that in the six years since we changed their diet we have only had a couple of occasions where we even needed to call our vet for advice - and even then, a simple homemade remedy was all that was required! Whenever our vet sees our pugs, she is always pleased with how happy and healthy they are.
We like to pay attention to the shots our dogs are given. There has been a lot of controversy over what shots are needed and when they should be given. The ingredients found in some shots have also come under scrutiny - the concern being they may cause serious illnesses in some dogs, and even death. For that reason we have made it our practice to ask a lot of questions, do a lot of research, and make careful decisions about what shots to give our pugs, and when. As far as our puppies are concerned, we leave that choice up to their adoptive family, but would encourage the new owners to do the research themselves, discuss it with their vet, and make informed choices.
We start our puppies out with a raw meat, whole food diet. They love it! Their first real meal is ground turkey, with pumpkin - pureed to make it easily digestible. We add different foods one at a time (to make sure they can handle each one) like applesauce, beet greens, butternut squash, broccoli, carrots, oatmeal, millet, etc. until they are eating just like their mama. It's fun to watch these fat little puglets thrive on this diet!
